Background of the Study
Dietary habits play a crucial role in the maintenance of cardiovascular health, particularly among retirees who may be more susceptible to heart disease due to aging and cumulative lifestyle factors. In Ogun State, retirees often face dietary challenges that include the consumption of high-fat, high-salt, and low-nutrient foods, contributing to the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Shifts from traditional diets to more Westernized eating patterns have been observed in the region, which can negatively affect cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and overall cardiac function (Adekunle, 2023). In addition, the transition into retirement often brings changes in lifestyle, such as decreased physical activity and altered meal patterns, which further compound the risk of CVD.

Recent research emphasizes that dietary interventions and nutritional education can lead to significant improvements in cardiovascular outcomes. Evidence suggests that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are associated with a lower risk of heart disease. However, in Ogun State, economic constraints and the influence of modern food marketing have made it difficult for many retirees to maintain a balanced diet. This study aims to explore the relationship between dietary habits and cardiovascular health among retirees in Ogun State, with a focus on identifying risk factors and potential avenues for dietary improvement (Oluwaseun, 2024). By evaluating current eating practices and their impact on heart health, the research seeks to provide actionable recommendations for nutritional interventions that can reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease among retirees (Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Retirees in Ogun State are experiencing an increasing burden of cardiovascular disease, a trend that is closely linked to poor dietary habits. Despite widespread awareness of the importance of healthy eating, many retirees continue to consume diets high in processed foods and low in essential nutrients. Economic limitations, lack of nutritional education, and the pervasive influence of fast-food culture contribute to this unhealthy dietary pattern. The resulting imbalance in nutrient intake has led to elevated risks of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular complications. Moreover, the absence of targeted dietary intervention programs for retirees means that this vulnerable population is often left to manage their own nutritional health, leading to suboptimal outcomes (Ibrahim, 2023).

Inadequate research into the specific dietary patterns of retirees in Ogun State further complicates efforts to design effective public health strategies. Without detailed data on the types of foods consumed and their frequency, it is challenging to quantify the direct impact of diet on cardiovascular health in this group. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis of retirees’ dietary habits and correlating them with cardiovascular health indicators. The findings will be essential for developing nutritional guidelines and intervention programs tailored to the needs of retired populations, ultimately aiming to reduce the incidence and severity of cardiovascular disease (Ojo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the dietary habits of retirees in Ogun State.
  • To examine the relationship between dietary patterns and cardiovascular health indicators.
  • To propose nutritional intervention strategies to improve heart health among retirees.

Research Questions

  • What are the prevalent dietary habits among retirees in Ogun State?
  • How do these dietary patterns correlate with cardiovascular health outcomes?
  • What nutritional interventions can effectively improve cardiovascular health in this population?

Research Hypotheses

  • Unhealthy dietary habits are significantly associated with poorer cardiovascular health among retirees.
  • High consumption of processed foods is correlated with increased cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Nutritional education and intervention programs will lead to measurable improvements in heart health indicators.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on retirees (aged 60 and above) in selected urban and rural areas of Ogun State. Data will be collected through dietary surveys, health assessments, and interviews. Limitations include self-report bias in dietary recalls and potential confounding variables such as physical activity levels.

Definitions of Terms

  • Dietary Habits: Regular eating patterns and food choices that individuals maintain over time.
  • Cardiovascular Health: The overall condition of the heart and blood vessels, including risk factors for heart disease.
  • Retirees: Individuals who have ceased full-time employment, typically aged 60 and above.
